"It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity." Albert Einstein.
Over time the world has suffered a lot of changes, going from the first man in the moon until the appearance of the smartphones who at first kind of were an amazing thing anyone could have but now anybody can have one of them. Media is used in every single place of the world, whether it is a phone, a TV or a computer or any kind of technologic device it is present in every part of the world at all times and we can't ignore it anymore. At first technology was made for research, scientists even used it, also made it for factories to improve their working and also for different companies but, do you think that technology is used correctly in the world?
I am not against media but neither I support it at all. I personally think that media depends in the usage we give to it. The first example of a good use of media is the use of it in the revolution in Tunisia years ago. First lets start with saying that thanks to media I knew about the revolution in that country, second of all, many of the people in Tunisia had different social networks (Facebook in majority), their government wouldn't show the reality of the country in the time so people all across Tunisia started recording in videos what was happening and posting it into Facebook so that way the whole world would be aware of what was happening and even could help them. Another factor in which media helped was in a TV channel called Al Jazeera which was the only channel which showed what was happening so a global audience could get tuned into the Al Jazeera English lifestream at AlJazeera.net. This is an example of a good use of media because people are protesting and showing the world how unfair events are taking place on their country. Another example of a good media use is an example I am going to use from my own life, 5 years or so ago my cousins (two of them) decided to go to study and therefore live to Australia, that means to the other side of the planet, one of them was like a sister to me so I knew I was going to miss her a lot and I was not going to be able to talk to her all the time. At first obviously communication was kind of difficult because the phone calls were too expensive and I was not going to pay so much, even my father would have killed me. Over time social networks such as twitter, Facebook, whatsapp and specially Skype have appeared, nowadays thanks to Skype we can talk for free for as long as we can and even do video calls in which she sees me and I see her, just having internet and Skype on your phone or computer would let you talk for free (which is better) with someone who is 14,600 kilometers away from you. I believe this is a good use of media because we are connecting with someone we miss and who is so far away.
Now I would give you bad examples of media usage which are the reason of my quote at the start (yes, you have to go up because you didn't read it or forgot it) that says how we are loosing our humanity. Over time people have become totally addicted to their smartphones and I even introduce me in that group of people (addicted to we heart it). One example is from the article titled "Disruptions: More Connected, Yet More Alone" in this article you can be aware of many things that happened all around the world and probably you also do it. One of the examples used is the way Karen O, the lead singer go the rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs was in the middle of a show in New York City and decided to tell the audience to put away their phones. Another example is how Ms. deGuzman says she was at a concert and instead of watching the live concert she was videotaping it and watching it through a little screen. Along with these examples there are others that show also the way in which people are loosing themselves, stopping completely their contact with the world because they are always on their phones. This are examples of bad media use, we are loosing ourselves because of the media, we are always on our phones and not paying attention to the life outside of them. Now I am going to use a personal example, my cousin (the one from the other example) came to Colombia on christmas, all the family was very happy to be with him again (not all the family) since he was going to stay only a month, my mother invited him, my little cousin (I am 2 days older than him), my uncle and my other cousin to eat at our house tomato soup which is delicious, I was so happy to see my cousin again that I really never thought of using my phone so much, I just wanted to hear everything about his life in Australia. My little and yet not so little cousin is addicted to metal and texting, he is also addicted to food but when we sat down on the table he plugged in his earphones at the highest volume his cellphone could afford and decided to ignore all the family which was being reunited, I personally think that was awful, if I went to live to a country far away and come back I would not like a member of my family to be listening to music and not talking to me which just came back from kilometers away. This is a bad use because you are ignoring a moment with your family and we all know that the family is not forever, someday they would be gone and we will regret the moments in which we ignored them the way my little cousin did with all of us in the lunch.
In conclusion I think that media is not bad and neither good it just depends on the use each individual gives to it and how controlled they are because if they don't take control over it they would get addicted to media to a point in which they won't be able to spend a single minute without their phone or their computer, they will start feeling the necessity of having their phone right besides them.
For now, why don't you try out this idea with your friends or even family?
